Where to go, our future?
Nanotechnology in Electronics
Introduction
In the book ‘The World is Flat’, Thomas Friedman described Globalization 3.0 (which started around year 2000) is shrinking the world from a size small to a size tiny and flattening the playing field at the same time.
Similarly, the rise of nanotechnology is shrinking materials in our day to day lives from a size small to a size nano. In our blog, our team would like to share about the application of nanotechnology in electronics over four different industries: Medical Industry, Power Supply Industry, Mobile Device Industry and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Industry.
Medical Industry – Nanorobotics
Individual Blog: http://anthea-godiva.blogspot.hk/Globalization has opened up many opportunities in the medical industry. With the development of emerging technologies such as mobile and cloud innovations, knowledge can now be shared rapidly between developed countries and emerging markets. Global health systems and health services are generally improving and medical technology innovation in emerging markets such as China, India, and Brazil may surpass developed countries in innovative healthcare delivery over the next decade. Hundreds of millions of local people have also gained middle-income status in developing countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, China, Nigeria, and South Africa and more and more people now have financial resources to pay for high quality medical care.
The application of nanotechnology in medicine is transforming the traditional ways of using medicine to treat diseases and tissue damage. Nanorobotics is an emerging innovation in the field of nanotechnology that is revolutionizing the medical industry. It is the new prospect of developing highly advanced robots whose dimensions are in the scale of a nanometer (10-9 meters) and can be used as surgical instrumentation, drug delivery and diagnosis. As physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman has predicted long ago in 1959, nanorobots simply allows us to ‘swallow the doctor’.
Among the diseases and conditions that can be treated by nanorobots are:-
- Treating arteriosclerosis
- Breaking up blood clots
- Fighting cancer
- Helping the body clot
- Parasite Removal
- Gout
- Breaking up kidney stones
Power Supply Industry - Nano-generator
Individual Blog: http://daisymmm.blogspot.hk/
The word Nano-generator, as its self-explanatory, is a powder supply device that being fabricated and applied in the nano scale. With the influence of the globalization, the nanotechnology has been researched and applied worldwidely. However, some of the techniques, such as nano Li-ion battery and nanorobot, cannot be entirely implemented due to the limitation of power sources. The invention of nano-generator provides a perfect solution for this problem and makes all the nano devices more practicable. On the other hand, the roaring high-tech development requires lots of economic supports as well. Investors would always love to provide monetary assistance if the project is promising and of course the emerging nanotechnology is one of the best choices.
When introducing nanotechnology into the power supply industry, the novel nano-generator was endowed with a plenty application. Besides making the realization of nano electronic devices become possible, it can also act as a wearable product, which can generate electric power by the human movement. At this point, the nano-generator could be regarded as one of the future green energy, and even be a blue energy, which can be achieved by recycling the energy from the ocean. The application of nanotechnology makes everything within the industry more subtle and builds a connection among the nano electronic products at the same time.

Mobile Industry - Flexible Nano-pixels Display
Individual Blog: http://2015-5516-go-diva-53694965.blogspot.hk/
Since Mr. Steve Jobs announced first iPhone, touch screen mobile device has changed humans’ lives for nearly a decade until 2015 Q1 it appears weak. Under the globalized economy, what is the next generation of mobile industry innovation? High-performance CPU? Larger screen? Or the battery innovation which has been a controversy for a long time but unable to obtain a technological breakthrough?
Since centuries ago, people have been dedicated to upgrade the technology by themselves. For example, the time. Engineers made the Big Ben smaller and smaller until it could be worn on the hand, which is known as the watch. However, in the era of nanotechnology, to wear more technology on our body and make life more convenient would be the major concern to global mobile device companies and manufacturers. Wearable technology on the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has reached an unprecedented heat. Thus, many experts believe that it will be the next revolution in mobile devices industry.

Thus, many experts believe that it will be the next revolution in mobile devices industry.
However, the current wearable device is not good enough and is lack of revolutionized innovation. Without special features, just monitoring body conditions and sleep quality, do we really need wearable devices? Where is future of the wearable device? And what is the bottleneck that is restricting the development of it?
From the perspective of operational time, the CPU and Screen are the main constraints that consume the most battery energy. However, a recent study from the University of Oxford has indicated that a new discovery with the nano-pixels display which contain ultra-low power consumption, flexibility and advanced static display could possibly be a good solution for the smart glass and wearable device in the mobile industry.
From the early military segment utilization to current commercial and civil use, UAV industry is steadily growing ahead associated with advanced technology and innovations. The current level of dependence of fossil fuels, the need of reducing the carbon emissions and footprint associated with energy use and the prospects of developing a new and extremely innovative technology sectors, make commercial and civil UAVs increasing attractive.(Anton Gavrailov,2014) The potential global market is vast and estimated to reach market value of €612.9 million in 2015.
Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems, or MEMS, is a technology that in its most general form can be defined as miniaturized mechanical and electro-mechanical elements (i.e., devices and structures) that are made using the techniques of microfabrication. The critical physical dimensions of MEMS devices can vary from well below one micron on the lower end of the dimensional spectrum, all the way to several millimeters. (What is MEMS technology, 2015)
MEMS inertial sensors, specifically accelerometers and gyroscopes, are quickly gaining market acceptance. More recently, MEMS gyroscopes (i.e., rate sensors) have been developed for both automobile and consumer electronics applications. (MEMS application, 2015)In the UAV industry, MEMS gyroscopes based inertial navigation system with GPS module offer a combined position, velocity and attitude solution under both dynamic and static operating conditions. With such advantages as low cost, high reliability and intellectualization, MEMS gyroscopes will be widely applied in the advanced development of high-end UAVs and improvement of stable flight and accurate positioning under low altitude.
As an emerging technology, Nanotechnology is fundamentally changing our daily lives. We focused on the broad applications in the electronics part as we desire to explore more insights and values because of their versatile properties. From this perspective, we are looking forward to finding both the benefits and side effects imposed by such an innovative technology. In sum, the promising nanotechnology will revolutionize our approaches to common problems and lead to a new stage.
Where to go? Future is boundless and we are just on the road.
